Humbolt and ritter;
Similarities; --kantian thought influenced both [ chorological and chronological persective]
--holistic approach to geog[ unity of nature]
--emphasis on interrelationships/ spatial association and integration
--physical geog was considered basis of all studies
-- both emphasized importance of empirical method[ geog as science
Differences Humbolt; natural scientist [worked on general or systematic studies with major emphasis on physical]// deterministic since he considered man as part of nature// unity of nature[ balance where man is part of nature]//coined cosmography [ study of universe]
Ritter; religious man [ explored regional approach—1st order; earth 2nd order; continents 3rd order; relief 4th order;smaller areal units -emphasizes areal differentiation]//nature as habitat of man exhibiting possibilism// teleological arguments supporting unity
